Working from home with children – Real Business

With deadlines looming, the pressure of keeping customers happy and completing all the ad-hoc jobs while looking after your child can be exhausting both physically and mentally when working from home. With a strategic plan, you’ll be able to conquer this.
Be realistic
The first step to making working from home with children work for you is to be realistic about your goals, deadlines, working hours and time. Working from home is a great way to address the all-important work-life balance, especially having a baby or young child at home.
But if you are struggling to get this balance right and overexerting yourself trying to meet unrealistic deadlines, you’ll soon be wondering what the benefit is. The best way to avoid this is to set realistic expectations. Extend your deadlines, work the hours that suit you best and allow yourself plenty of time to work through everything you need.
Use your time wisely
Utilising the spare time you do have is essential when working from home with a baby. There are certain times of the day that are going to be ideal for getting work done, whereas others won’t be so productive.
You may be tempted to nap when they are napping, but this is the perfect time to get through some work. With baby travel cots from Kiddies Kingdom, you can work while your baby sleeps peacefully in the same room. You don’t have to worry about what they are doing while you’re hard at work. Early mornings should be your friend. Waking up early is the best way to get through a good chunk of work before everyone else wakes up. As the day goes on, you’ll be thankful you did.
Be flexible
One of the main advantages of working from home is the flexibility. If you aren’t tied to specific working hours, there’s nothing stopping you from picking up work whenever suits you best. If you find yourself wide awake at 2am after a feed, this is a great excuse to squeeze in some work while you’re up and active. Similarly, if you need to take a break at 11am to have a nap you should do so. It will improve your working performance in the long run.
Accept help
Although you may be reluctant, it will help you in the long run if you let others help you out. If people offer to take your children off your hands for the day, let them. Even if you have guests at the house, let them take care of things for an hour or so while you get some work done. You’ll be glad you did.
Plan ahead
Preparation is key with children. Plan everything! With some good planning, you can get ahead with your work and allow yourself time with your children or time to relax. If you have a big project coming up, make sure to get a head start because this will allow you a little more flexibility as it moves ahead. Also make sure to plan your baby’s day ahead of time. Plan their feeds and naps as this will make it easier to know when you’re going to be able to work and how much you will be able to do.
